Australia's Cooper Connolly was honoured with his esteemed Baggy Green cap before the commencement of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, signifying his long-anticipated entry into international cricket. The 22-year-old all-rounder, known for his proficiency in spin bowling, received cap number 471 from former Test cricketer Simon Katich, who hails from the same region of Western Australia.

Although Connolly has yet to secure a wicket in his four first-class appearances, he was included in the playing XI to enhance the team's batting strength for the second Test. He boasts an impressive batting average exceeding 61 across these matches. Connolly has also represented Australia in two One Day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals.

His inclusion marked a significant adjustment in the Australian lineup for the second Test, with captain Steve Smith choosing to bowl first after winning the toss. Smith announced that Connolly would take the place of Todd Murphy in the team, thereby strengthening Australia's batting lineup in a match anticipated to favour spin bowlers.

Connolly's parents, Shane and Donna, travelled from Perth to attend the cap presentation. Shane, a former cricketer, and Donna were present for this momentous occasion after arriving in time for last week's first Test.

"We have witnessed significant development in Cooper, and it is wonderful to see him receive this opportunity to debut," remarked Donna Connolly.

Earlier this week, Connolly's outstanding performance in the Big Bash League (BBL) earned him the Player of the Tournament accolade. The left-handed batsman emerged as the leading run-scorer for the Perth Scorchers, demonstrating his all-round talent in the competition and making a strong case for his selection.

Australia's captain, Steve Smith, expressed confidence in Connolly's abilities despite his limited experience in red-ball cricket. "Based on my observations in the nets, he delivers some impressive deliveries," Smith remarked. "He demonstrated a good level of consistency while bowling in Dubai and during our practice sessions here, which is essential in these conditions. The key is to focus on delivering as many quality balls in the right areas and allow the conditions to play their part."

As the second Test commenced, Connolly's inclusion in the playing XI represented a pivotal moment in his cricketing journey, with the demanding conditions in Galle providing a valuable opportunity for the young allrounder to showcase his talent.

In a parallel event, the Sri Lankan team honoured their former captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who was participating in his 100th and final Test match. Karunaratne had announced his retirement from all formats of cricket before the match, and a special pre-game ceremony was conducted to celebrate his illustrious career.
