Maxwell's IPL Misery Continues: "One More Run Than His Average" Jab Goes Viral

9 days ago | 5 Views

Glenn Maxwell was retained for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but the right-handed batsman was unable to justify the trust placed in him, continuing his disappointing performance in New Chandigarh. At 36 years old, Maxwell had an opportunity to steer the Punjab Kings away from difficulties and assist the team in setting a competitive score. Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull harshly criticized Maxwell for his lackluster display against the reigning champions, KKR.

Maxwell was dismissed by Varun Chakaravarthy, managing to score only 7 runs off 10 balls before returning to the pavilion. He was out on the very first delivery of the ninth over during Punjab Kings' innings. Throughout the IPL 2025 season, Maxwell has accumulated just 41 runs across 6 matches.

The PBKS batsman misjudged the googly bowled by Chakaravarthy. Attempting to drive the ball through the off-side, Maxwell was caught off guard as it spun sharply, striking the top of the middle and off stump.

Commenting on Maxwell's struggles on Cricbuzz, Doull humorously remarked, “He got one more than his average. Let's be fair to the bloke (laughs).”

"He simply couldn't read it. It was an excellent delivery. Chakaravarthy had mentioned something before the match that rings true: it doesn't matter what you analyze on a computer; you still have to face me. You need to discern where the ball is headed and how it behaves," he further elaborated.

‘Varun bowled a beautiful delivery’

Simon Doull praised Varun Chakaravarthy for delivering an exceptional ball to Glenn Maxwell, which effectively dismantled the batter's defense. The Kolkata Knight Riders dismissed the Punjab Kings for a mere 111 runs in just 16 overs, with both Varun and Sunil Narine taking two wickets each.

Harshit Rana stood out among the bowlers, claiming three wickets.

"It was an exquisite delivery. He reflected on the shot and realized it was the wrong choice. Instead of playing it straight down the ground with a straight bat while observing the ball's line, he attempted to hit it too squarely and consequently lost his wicket. It's another disappointment," Doull remarked.

It is noteworthy that the Punjab Kings excluded Marcus Stoinis from the lineup against KKR, while Glenn Maxwell remained despite his poor performance in the IPL.

Doull indicated that Stoinis is injured and may be sidelined for the next couple of weeks. However, it is important to note that this information was not mentioned during the official broadcast of the match between PBKS and KKR.

"Stoinis is indeed injured for a week or so. Nevertheless, it was still a rather poor shot, and it's a performance he won't remember fondly," Doull added.
