Matthew Hayden Shares Key Strategies for Rohit Sharma's Success

Renowned Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden believes that Rohit Sharma must restore his positive batting approach to regain his form. The Indian captain has been experiencing difficulties in red-ball cricket and is under scrutiny for his performance against fast bowlers. He also relinquished his opening position to KL Rahul in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, opting to bat at the number six position—a role he is familiar with, having made his Test debut in that spot.

Unfortunately, this decision did not yield favourable results in Adelaide, where he recorded scores of 3 and 6, failing to reach double digits.

Hayden offered crucial advice to Rohit, whom he regards as a naturally aggressive batsman, a quality that has been lacking in his recent performances.

"When I think of Rohit Sharma, I envision a batsman who scores freely. His remarkable double hundreds in one-day cricket and his brilliance in shorter formats come to mind," Hayden remarked to Star Sports.

In his last 12 innings, including 10 from India's home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, Rohit has accumulated only 142 runs at an average of 11.83, with just one half-century to his name.

Hayden emphasized that Rohit’s tendency to defend the ball will not resolve his issues, as his inherent style is characterized by positive intent and vigour.

"For Rohit Sharma's benefit, he must exhibit great intent and energy. Reflecting on the first game in Adelaide, he appeared somewhat lethargic. I would advise him, as his partner, 'I do not want to see you defending the ball.' I want him to be proactive, and fully engaged in the contest, as his natural game will flourish. Energy and intent will enable him to move his front foot closer to the ball," he concluded.

The Australian icon emphasized that "intent" and "energy" should serve as the two key concepts for Rohit to focus on to enhance his preparations and restore his rhythm.

"What I would advise you, Rohit, is to approach the game with significant energy and intent. I believe these two words could be essential for him to consider during his preparation," he remarked.

At the close of play, India found themselves at 51 for four, trailing Australia’s first-innings score by 394 runs, as the match was halted nearly an hour early due to poor lighting conditions at the Gabba. Rahul remained not out on 33, while Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who again batted at number six, had yet to score.
