India, Feb. 17 -- Boxing icon MC Mary Kom has stepped down from her role as chairperson of the Indian Olympic Association's Athletes Commission (AC) and as a member of the executive committee of the organization.
In a message shared within the Athletes Commission WhatsApp group on Sunday, Mary Kom, a six-time world champion, expressed her desire to conclude her duties with the IOA. "I had a wonderful experience with the IOA. It has been a significant part of my life. I regret to inform you that I have decided to resign and conclude my responsibilities with the IOA. I extend my best wishes to the IOA," she stated.
A member of the IOA athletes' body noted that Mary Kom did not provide a specific reason for her resignation, and they will await an official letter before determining the next steps. Table tennis champion Sharath Kamal serves as the vice-chairperson of the AC, which includes members such as Om Prakash Karhana, Shiva Keshavan, Gagan Narang, Bajrang Lal, PV Sindhu, Bhavani Devi, and Rani Rampal. Abhinav Bindra holds an ex-officio position due to his membership in the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Athletes Commission.
The 10-member AC was established when the new IOA, led by president PT Usha, took office in November 2022. This athletes' body was created in accordance with IOC guidelines to represent athletes and ensure their voices are central to the decision-making process. Two members of the AC, including the chairperson, are integrated into the IOA executive committee, and AC members also have representation in various IOA committees. Additionally, the AC is tasked with facilitating the establishment of independent athletes' commissions within National Sports Federations (NSFs), which would subsequently elect members to the IOA AC.
However, the IOA athletes' body has struggled to become operational and has remained inactive for an extended period. Following a few initial meetings, no further gatherings have taken place. Bindra has frequently emphasized the importance of revitalizing the athletes' body to effectively address their concerns within the IOA, which is currently mired in a conflict between Usha and other executive committee members.
