Australia's Nathan McSweeney opened up about his chat with Marnus Labuschagne after Labuschagne was left out of the squad for the final two Tests against India. McSweeney had a rough start to his career, facing off against one of the best bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah, during his debut series, which didn’t go as planned.
Bumrah has been a nightmare for Australia’s top order in the first three Tests of the five-match series, which is currently tied at 1-1. He’s taken 21 wickets so far, and the Aussie batters really need to figure out how to handle him.
While McSweeney took the hit for Australia’s struggling batting at the top, Khawaja is also feeling the heat after a tough stretch.
McSweeney mentioned that Labuschagne had a chat with him to give him some encouragement.
"Marnus specifically told me, 'It's not about where you start, but where you finish.' It's all part of the journey; a good story has its highs and lows—it's a learning experience," McSweeney shared after his impressive 78-run performance led the Brisbane Heat to victory over the Adelaide Strikers.
The 25-year-old, who made his Test debut in the first match in Perth, struggled to find his rhythm, failing to hit a single half-century. His scores in six innings were 10, 0, 39, 10 not out, 9, and 4, and he was dismissed by Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah four times.
Sam Konstas Set to Debut at MCG for Boxing Day Test
Teenage star Sam Konstas has received his first call-up as Australia decided to drop McSweeney for the last two Test matches.
At just 19 years old, he’s on track to be the youngest Test batting debutant for Australia in more than seven decades.
If Konstas, who celebrated his 19th birthday on October 2, gets the nod for the Boxing Day Test, he’ll take the title of Australia’s youngest Test debutant since current captain Pat Cummins, who was only 18 years and 193 days old when he debuted against South Africa in Johannesburg back in 2011.
