Mark the Calendar! Dale Steyn Reveals Date and Opponent for SRH’s 300-Run Storm

The Sunrisers Hyderabad commenced their IPL 2025 campaign in a manner reminiscent of their conclusion to the 2024 season—dominating their opponents with remarkable force. Featuring a roster filled with powerful hitters, SRH overwhelmed the Rajasthan Royals, achieving a formidable total of 286/6, marking their second-highest score in IPL history. It is worth noting that SRH appears to be the only team with the potential to surpass the celebrated 300-run threshold, as they hold the record for four of the five highest team totals in the Indian Premier League. On Sunday, they came tantalizingly close, falling short by just 14 runs. However, according to Dale Steyn, the day when SRH reaches or exceeds 300 runs is on the horizon.

The former South African fast bowler even predicts the specific date for this milestone. He believes that April 17, when the Sunrisers face off against the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, will witness the first-ever 300-run innings in IPL history. "A small prediction: April 17 will see the first 300 in IPL. Who knows, I might even be there to witness it," he tweeted.

In their most recent encounter in Mumbai, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted an impressive score of 277/3 against the Mumbai Indians, with Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen leading the charge by hitting a remarkable 17 sixes. Despite a strong effort from the five-time champions, they ultimately fell short by 31 runs. Dale Steyn expressed his belief that SRH would be the first team to reach 300 runs, rather than MI, as he responded to a fan's tweet about the possibility of MI batting first. He humorously acknowledged the suggestion, stating, "Haha! Great point."

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians' contrasting beginnings

SRH and MI experienced markedly different beginnings in IPL 2025. The Sunrisers, last year's runners-up, achieved a convincing 44-run victory over the Royals, while MI extended their unfortunate trend of losing the opening match for the 13th consecutive season. The last time MI triumphed in their first match of a season was in 2012. Since then, they have claimed five titles—tying for the most by any franchise—yet their struggle in season openers persists. Although they challenged CSK, half-centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad ultimately secured the win for CSK.

On the other hand, the Sunrisers benefited from an outstanding century by Ishan Kishan. In November, the former MI player was acquired for ₹11.25 crore during the IPL 2025 mega-auction, and owner Kavya Maran's reaction indicated that SRH had made a wise investment. Ishan, whose career faced significant challenges last year—first being removed from BCCI's central contracts list and then falling down the ranks among India's wicketkeepers—found renewed hope as he scored the first century of IPL 2025.
