Marizanne Kapp Aims for an Indian Double

Lucknow: Marizanne Kapp is pursuing two significant objectives this year. As a pivotal member of the Delhi Capitals, she is focused on clinching the Women’s Premier League title while also aspiring for success in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup with South Africa, which is set to take place in India later this year.
At the age of 35, Kapp stands out as one of the most resilient and seasoned international cricketers in women's cricket. Her vast experience in Indian conditions—comprising 19 ODIs, 8 T20Is, two Tests, and 22 WPL matches—has enhanced her proficiency on these pitches. In the ongoing WPL season, she has made notable contributions, scoring 59 runs and taking 6 wickets in six matches.
“I would love to win a World Cup. That’s the number one goal and dream. And winning the WPL, I feel like we’ve been such a good side for the last three years, so it would be amazing to win,” Kapp expressed in an interview with HT.
“Ultimately, my primary aim is to perform for my team, whether it’s with the bat, ball, or in the field.”
Kapp, who describes herself as a “rhythm player,” joined the Delhi Capitals two weeks before the WPL's commencement on February 14, training with domestic players to prepare for the competition. However, an injury that required a week of bed rest hindered her progress. Even for the most accomplished and seasoned athletes, overcoming doubts and nerves can be a challenge at times.
In my initial games, I experienced a degree of nervousness. The ball was not coming off my bat as I had hoped, and my confidence was lacking. However, I am gradually regaining my rhythm and starting to feel more at ease with my skills and the responsibilities I have towards my team.
Kapp attributes her remarkable fitness to a solid foundation established during her childhood through participation in various sports, including netball and athletics. Nevertheless, she recognizes the strain that her rigorous schedule imposes.
“It has been challenging, as I have been engaged in continuous cricket without a proper off-season for quite some time. Over the past few years, my focus has primarily been on maintenance and managing minor injuries to ensure my continued participation.
“The demands are not only physical but also mental. It requires constant focus and alertness. While it has been difficult, I have been navigating this for many years, and I relish the challenge.”
The allrounder expressed, “I find it extremely frustrating if I do not perform or contribute; I would prefer not to play at all than to deliver an average performance. My goal is to strive for victory in every match and to excel consistently.”
After the WPL, Kapp will participate in a strength and conditioning camp organized by Cricket South Africa. Furthermore, the WPL season is expected to enhance her preparation for the World Cup. Both South Africa and India are in pursuit of their first ODI World Cup title. Since its inception in 1973, the tournament has been claimed by only two countries: Australia, with eight victories, and England, with four.
“I have always enjoyed playing in the subcontinent. The ball tends to swing significantly here, and I particularly enjoy batting in 50-over matches. Having participated in this tournament for three years and having toured frequently, I believe my familiarity with the conditions will provide a substantial advantage.”
With DC having secured a playoff spot for the third consecutive season, achieving five wins out of seven matches, Kapp is aware of the increased expectations. “Reaching the final in the first two WPLs is a significant accomplishment. However, we must remain focused.”
