Kolkata:Manu Bhaker, India's sole double medallist from a single Olympic Games, expressed on Thursday the necessity for the Indian sports community to promote coaching among its own members. This sentiment was echoed by Pullela Gopichand, the chief national badminton coach.
“I refer to our athletes who have retired. At times, we do not sufficiently support our own,” she remarked during the Trailblazers 3.0 sports conclave held here.
Bhaker, aged 23, emphasized that former athletes possess a deeper understanding of Indian sportspeople and can relate to them more effectively. “While foreign coaches have their place, it is essential to provide greater opportunities for Indian coaches,” she stated.
In a separate comment, Gopichand highlighted the shortage of coaches in India, advocating for increased investment in former Indian athletes to transition into coaching roles.
He further noted that coaching requires significant focus in India. “We might assume that coaching is straightforward, but the reality is that it is quite complex. If one lacks knowledge, it becomes evident,” he explained.
Bhaker acknowledged the influence of Jaspal Rana, who accompanied her at the Paris Olympics, where she secured bronze medals in both the 10m air pistol and the 10m mixed air pistol team events. “I would not have achieved my current status without his guidance,” Bhaker stated.
This was one of her three aspirations for the Indian sports framework. The other two included ensuring job security for athletes and enhancing junior programs across various sports.
Bhaker also mentioned that preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics commenced last January. “The pistols have been ordered, and grips have been crafted. We will begin our training in earnest around June-July,” she noted, adding that there will be competitions aimed at both winning and experimentation.
