Hardik Pandya's Mumbai Indians staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the Delhi Capitals in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Delhi's batsman Karun Nair was performing well and appeared poised to lead Axar Patel's team to victory. However, his dismissal by Mitchell Santner opened the door for Mumbai's resurgence. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh praised Rohit Sharma for his crucial strategic decision during the match, which ultimately secured a 12-run victory for the five-time champions.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, Rohit Sharma executed a brilliant strategy from the sidelines. In the 14th over, he instructed Karn Sharma to request a change of ball, a tactic allowed under new BCCI regulations that permit teams to change the ball in the second innings after the 10th over to mitigate the effects of dew.

The ball change proved pivotal, as Karn Sharma subsequently dismissed Tristan Stubbs. Shortly thereafter, he also took the wicket of KL Rahul, and the Mumbai Indians maintained their momentum. Although Vipraj Nigam and Ashutosh Sharma attempted to guide Delhi to victory, their efforts were thwarted by three consecutive run-outs in the final over.

Harbhajan Singh noted that Mumbai's head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, was initially opposed to Rohit Sharma's strategy of requesting a ball change and utilizing spinners in the latter stages of Delhi's innings.

"Rohit Sharma executed a masterstroke. He consulted with head coach Mahela Jayawardene about bringing in spinners and introducing Karn Sharma into the attack. I believe Mahela was not in agreement with this approach. Had they followed Jayawardene's suggestions, the Mumbai Indians might have lost the match. Rohit Sharma made the right call; he thinks like a captain. A captain's insight is invaluable, and his tactical decisions were key to Mumbai's victory," Harbhajan remarked on his YouTube channel.

Karn Sharma entered the bowling attack and claimed three wickets, significantly altering the course of the match. This strategic decision proved to be highly effective. Had Rohit Sharma been present in the dugout, the situation might have been different, particularly when Tilak Varma was forced to retire against Lucknow and Mitchell Santner was brought in. Mahela Jayawardene's decision was questionable. Rohit had previously delivered an outstanding performance against the Delhi Capitals. It is essential for coaches to set aside their egos and prioritize the team's best interests. I hope Rohit Sharma continues to provide his insights from the sidelines, he remarked.

'The match was incredible'

Harbhajan described the match between the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals as "incredible," noting that it was an enjoyable experience for all spectators. Earlier, the Delhi Capitals won the toss and chose to bowl first. Tilak Varma contributed a half-century, while Naman Dhir added a valuable cameo, enabling the Mumbai Indians to surpass 200 runs.

"The encounter between the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals was remarkable. Everyone received excellent entertainment value. The Mumbai Indians maintained their composure and successfully defended a total of 205 runs," Harbhajan stated.

"This victory will instill confidence and belief in the team. It is a significant win. Karun Nair was performing exceptionally well, aggressively targeting the bowlers. He was unstoppable, spreading his influence like wildfire," he added.

Rohit Sharma struggled with the bat, managing only 18 runs. The right-handed batsman has had difficulty finding his rhythm in the current 18th season of the IPL, and this score against the Delhi Capitals marks his highest in the 2025 edition of the tournament.
