In a comical twist, Magnus Carlsen's notorious jeans, which sparked debate during the 2024 World Rapid Championship, have been auctioned on eBay for an impressive sum of around ₹31,57,686. The Norwegian chess champion plans to donate the proceeds to a charitable organization.

The identity of the winning bidder has not been disclosed, remaining a mystery. This individual secured the highest bid on Saturday, following a competitive 10-day auction for the jeans, which are a size 32 and produced by the Italian brand Corneliani.

The auction drama

The auction commenced with the highest bid of ₹12,33,334; however, in the final hour leading up to the deadline, there was a surge of substantial bids. Within less than 30 minutes and following over 30 significant bids, the leading offer soared to a final total of ₹31,57,686. Additionally, the successful bidder will need to pay approximately ₹6,472 for the delivery of the jeans.

Last year during the Rapid Championship, Carlsen disagreed with the FIDE organizers and the arbiter after he appeared in jeans, which violated the established rules. He received a warning from the arbiter and was fined. Although he was instructed to change his jeans, he refused, stating he would do so the following day. Consequently, he was expelled from subsequent pairings that day but was permitted to return the next day.

In retaliation, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament and criticized FIDE for their organizational shortcomings. Although he later returned for the Blitz Championship, he once again attracted controversy by sharing the title with Ian Nepomniachtchi.

During the Chessable Masters, when asked about the auction, Carlsen remarked, “I thought from the very beginning that this was a fun idea. All proceeds are going to a worthy charity. I hope it captures people's interest. They certainly rank among the more contemporary jeans.”
