MS Dhoni's Fiery Response Leaves CSK Coach Michael Hussey Speechless

MS Dhoni, the former captain of India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is famous for his cool demeanor on the field, staying calm no matter how intense the situation gets. But there was one moment when he surprisingly lost his cool, and it was directed at Michael Hussey, the batting coach of the five-time IPL champions.

Hussey, who used to play alongside Dhoni, shared a story about how the wicketkeeper-batter caught him off guard during his first season as a coach in the lucrative league.

For those who might not know, Hussey joined CSK as a batting coach in 2018, right when the team made its comeback after a two-year suspension. In that season, they faced SunRisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 1.

Hussey mentioned that he found it challenging to get too technical with Dhoni, even when discussing strategies to tackle Rashid Khan, the Afghan spinner.

“I love it. The talent is incredible, and coaching feels more like just not messing things up for these amazing players,” Hussey said on the Backchat Podcast.

“Working with MS Dhoni, who I believe is the greatest finisher ever, was surreal for me,” he added, before sharing a rather awkward moment.

I'll find my own damn path

Michael Hussey shared an interesting moment from the Qualifier 1 game, where a data exchange about Rashid Khan's bowling variations didn’t sit well with the wicketkeeper-batter. In that match, Dhoni was out bowled by Rashid, but CSK still managed to clinch the victory.

“The night before the match, the analyst sent me a split screen showing Rashid Khan’s bowling. It highlighted how he grips the ball differently for his wrong’uns and leg spinners. I thought, ‘This is useful,’ but it was the night before the game, so I was torn about whether to share it with the batters. I ended up staring at it for an hour because I didn’t want to overload their minds right before the match,” Hussey explained.

“The next day, we were in a tough spot, four wickets down with Dhoni and Faf at the crease. Rashid came in and bowled his wrong’un right away. Dhoni went for a cover drive against the spin and got bowled. You have to realize, this guy is a massive star, practically a legend. He looked me dead in the eye and said, ‘I’ll bat my own f***ing way, thanks,’ then sat down next to me. I thought, ‘Well, there goes my coaching career!’ I spent the rest of the game in shock,” he added.

Despite that moment, Hussey mentioned that he and Dhoni are good friends and have built a solid bond over time.

“Dhoni’s a fantastic guy. After the game, he told me, ‘The info was solid, but I needed more time and a few net sessions to really get it,’” he said.
