MS Dhoni on IPL’s Impact Player Rule: ‘Didn’t See the Need for It Back Then

The peculiar influence of the impact player rule on the Indian Premier League (IPL) has sparked numerous calls for its removal, alongside recognition of its contribution to an increase in high-scoring matches. One of the most notable figures to express reservations about the rule is MS Dhoni, the legendary player of the Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni has articulated his reasons for believing that the rule was unnecessary at the time of its introduction.
“When this rule was introduced, I thought it wasn’t really essential. While it offers some advantages, it also has its drawbacks. I continue to perform my wicketkeeping duties, so I do not consider myself an impact player. My involvement in the game remains crucial,” Dhoni stated in an interview with JioStar.
Virat Kohli remarked last season that although he acknowledges the entertainment value of high scores for spectators, he prefers a more equitable balance between batting and bowling. He noted that his notably high strike rate last season was influenced by the rule, as top-order batsmen were afforded greater freedom to pursue aggressive shots due to the presence of an additional batter.
In contrast, Dhoni expressed skepticism regarding the idea that the rule has directly resulted in increased scoring. “Many claim that the rule has contributed to higher scores. I contend that it is more attributable to the playing conditions and the players' comfort levels. The surge in runs is not solely due to the presence of an extra batsman,” Dhoni explained.
“It revolves around the mindset—teams now feel more secure with an additional batter, which encourages a more aggressive style of play. It’s not necessarily about utilizing all four or five extra batters; it’s the confidence derived from having them available. This reflects the evolution of T20 cricket.”
