MS Dhoni on IPL Retirement: "It’s Not My Decision Alone"
7 days ago | 5 Views
Every year, fans of the Indian Premier League eagerly look forward to seeing the legendary former captain of India, MS Dhoni, in the colors of the Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni only plays in the IPL and takes a break from cricket for the other ten months. However, in recent years, discussions about his retirement have intensified at the end of each season. Although he continues to represent the Super Kings, there’s been a lot of talk about his future with the team as the 2025 season unfolds, especially concerning his fitness and batting role.
In a challenging match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru early in the season, Dhoni batted at number nine, with CSK even opting to send Ravichandran Ashwin in ahead of him. During a game against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, Dhoni came in to bat during the 11th over while CSK was struggling at 74/5 in pursuit of 184 runs. Despite remaining not out, he couldn’t lead the team to victory, scoring 30 runs off 26 balls.
With retirement rumors swirling, Dhoni has finally addressed his future. In a pre-recorded podcast with Raj Shamani, he mentioned his intention to play the entire 2025 season and will make a decision about the following year later on.
“Retirement isn’t on my mind right now. I’m still playing in the IPL, and I keep it simple by taking it one year at a time,” Dhoni shared.
“At 43, I’ll be 44 by the time July comes around. I have ten months to figure out if I want to play another year. It’s not just my choice; it’s my body that will tell me if I can continue. One year at a time. Right now, I’m fully focused on what needs to be done. We’ll see what happens in 8-10 months,” said the captain who has led his team to five IPL titles.
CSK facing challenges in IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings have had a rocky beginning to their 2025 season, managing just one victory out of four games. Their sole win was in the first match of the year against Mumbai Indians, where they triumphed by four wickets.
Next up, Ruturaj Gaikwad and his team will face the strong Punjab Kings in their upcoming IPL match on April 8.
