The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) is approaching, marking a time when younger fans can once again witness MS Dhoni in action. It has been nearly five years since the 43-year-old retired from international cricket, approximately eight years since he stepped down as captain of the Indian team across all formats, and nearly eleven years since his retirement from Test cricket. Nevertheless, Dhoni continues to leave a significant mark both on the field with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and off the field within the IPL. This is evidenced by a recent rule change implemented prior to the auction for this season, which effectively allows CSK to retain him as an uncapped player. Dhoni now appears committed to repaying this trust by showcasing his exceptional skills.

A recent video from the CSK training sessions captures Dhoni executing his iconic helicopter shot, sending the ball soaring over the head of young Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana. This shot became a hallmark of Dhoni's early career but had largely faded from his repertoire in recent years. When it did resurface, it often concluded with the bat performing a more controlled cartwheel in Dhoni's hands after striking the ball.

Dhoni is the sole player from the inaugural season of the IPL who remains active in the league, making this his 18th season and marking 25 years in cricket since he made his senior debut in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar in January 2000. He retired from international cricket in August 2020, with his final match for India being the semi-final of the World Cup the previous year. Since then, his only participation in cricket has been through the IPL.

Remarkably, even at the age of 42, he played a crucial role for the Chennai Super Kings last season, amassing 161 runs at an impressive strike rate of 220.54 and an average of 53.66 over 11 innings, while maintaining his sharpness behind the stumps.
