MS Dhoni Reveals ‘Wicket Dekha, Maar Diya’ Mentality Behind Stunning Run-Out, Pant Responds with Humor

One of the standout moments from MS Dhoni's impressive performance against the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday at the Ekana Stadium, which could easily make it to the highlight reels of IPL 2025, was the run-out of Abdul Samad. This play sparked debate among experts about whether it was just a lucky break or a showcase of Dhoni's skill. Dhoni later shared his thoughts on the run-out, which marked him as the first wicketkeeper in IPL history to achieve 200 dismissals.

The incident occurred on the second ball of the second-to-last over of Lucknow's innings when Matheesha Pathirana bowled a wide delivery down the leg side to Samad. Pant quickly called for a single, but Samad was a bit slow to respond.

Demonstrating his quick thinking, Dhoni collected the ball and noticed that Pant had already crossed the halfway mark. He aimed for the non-striker's end and made a perfect throw, catching Samad just short of the crease.

In a video shared by the Lucknow Super Giants on social media, Dhoni was asked by Pant about the run-out, and he revealed his mindset: "Wicket dekha, maar diya (I just saw the stumps and went for it). It either hits or misses, that was the mentality." In the clip, LSG mentor Zaheer Khan humorously mimicked Dhoni, to which Pant responded with a witty remark, "Lage ja rahi hai na (Yeah, but you rarely miss!)."

However, the Lucknow captain confessed that he was concerned Dhoni might target him instead during that moment. He admitted, “I was close, I ran fast. I was worried I’d get run out.”

Was it just a coincidence?

Ex-Chennai Super Kings player Robin Uthappa, who has plenty of experience behind the stumps, suggested that Dhoni's play was a bit of a 'tukka' (fluke). "Having worn the gloves myself, I can say this was definitely a 'tukka'," he shared on Star Sports.

Later in the game, Dhoni made a significant impact by scoring a rapid 26 not out off just 11 balls, helping Chennai end their losing streak with a five-wicket victory over Lucknow.
