MS Dhoni Reflects on No-Ball Controversy: Admits Storming Onto Field Was a 'Big Mistake'

In the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League, a high-stakes match unfolded as the Chennai Super Kings faced off against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. The game concluded with an exhilarating finish, but it was during the final over that then-CSK captain MS Dhoni became embroiled in a significant controversy.

As CSK aimed to chase down 18 runs in the last over, Dhoni was dismissed on the third ball, leaving Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner to complete the chase. On the fourth delivery, Ben Stokes bowled a waist-high full toss, which the on-field umpire Ullas Gandhe initially deemed a no-ball. However, square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford overturned this decision, resulting in confusion and discontent within the CSK camp.

In a rare display of frustration, Dhoni exited the dugout to confront the umpires, a move that is uncommon for a captain. Despite his passionate objections, the officials upheld their revised ruling, declaring the delivery legal.

This incident overshadowed the thrilling conclusion of the match, although Santner's six on the final ball ultimately secured victory for CSK. Subsequently, Dhoni was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct, marking one of the most contentious moments in his career.

Nearly six years later, Dhoni reflected on this incident during a candid conversation with Mandira Bedi, describing it as a “big mistake.”

“It occurred in one of the IPL matches when I walked onto the field. That was a significant error. However, there have been other instances where emotions can be triggered. In our sport, the stakes are incredibly high, and the expectation is to win every game. You must navigate numerous pressures,” Dhoni remarked during the chat hosted by MasterCard.

“That’s why I advise that when you feel angry or frustrated, it’s best to remain silent. Step away for a moment and take deep breaths. It’s akin to managing pressure. If you can detach yourself from the outcome, it proves beneficial. Your emotions should not influence your decision-making.”

Dhoni set for return

Dhoni is no longer the captain of CSK but continues to play an important leadership role, and will return to action in the 2025 edition of the tournament. The Super Kings, now led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, will begin their campaign in the season against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians on March 23.
