MS Dhoni Loses Cool at Youngster Shaik Rasheed Over Costly Overthrow for CSK

20-year-old Shaik Rasheed experienced a challenging time on the cricket pitch on Friday. The young Chennai Super Kings batsman was dismissed for a golden duck in the IPL 2025 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad after he was unable to handle a delivery from Mohammed Shami, which drew the displeasure of CSK captain MS Dhoni in the latter part of the match.

Rasheed's unnecessary throw on the last ball of the 8th over of SRH's innings allowed Ishan Kishan to secure an additional run. CSK all-rounder Sam Curran bowled a full delivery outside off, which Kishan hit and then took off for a standard single. Rasheed, positioned at extra cover, charged in and attempted a throw at the non-striker's end, where no one was backing up.

The ball missed the stumps and permitted Kishan to return for a couple of runs. Rasheed's reckless action did not sit well with Dhoni, who is typically not known for expressing his emotions on the field. While switching ends, Dhoni was observed pointing towards his head while looking at Rasheed, clearly conveying a message to the young player to think before making such a throw.

Rasheed, CSK's newest opener, has only been able to accumulate 46 runs across four matches. It was yet another frustrating day for the CSK batsmen. Harshal, an excellent practitioner of the slower delivery and the knuckleball, achieved figures of 4 for 28 as Chennai Super Kings faced another disappointing performance with the bat, getting bowled out for 154 in 19. 5 overs.

Even with help from the dew-soaked surface, SRH struggled during the chase before finally reaching the target in 18. 4 overs.

Ishan Kishan (44 off 34 balls), following his moment of confusion against Mumbai Indians, played a solid innings at the top before Kamindu Mendis (32 not out off 22 balls) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (19 not out off 13 balls) secured two points for the visitors with a partnership of 49 runs. This marked SRH's first victory at this venue.

With six points from nine matches, SRH’s qualification for the playoffs is precarious as they need to win all five remaining games, and by a substantial margin, to finish with 16 points, which is a safe threshold.

SRH climbed past Rajasthan Royals to the eighth spot in the 10-team standings, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team remains at the very bottom.

For CSK, their seventh loss in nine matches nearly extinguishes their hopes, as they now require victories in the next five games and need the playoff cutoff to stay at 14 for the fourth-placed team.
