The 24-year-old recorded figures of 3/32, and although these numbers may not seem game-changing, his performance was impressive enough that even the legendary MS Dhoni acknowledged his talent with a congratulatory gesture after Chennai Super Kings secured a four-wicket victory, marking a strong start to their campaign.

As a left-arm wrist-spinner, a rarity in international cricket, Puthur was anticipated to be an unpredictable asset. His ability to spin the ball in both directions with similar deliveries added to his intrigue. Notably, it wasn't just the CSK batsmen who struggled against him; he also managed to outsmart his own teammates at MI, including the star-studded trio.

"Rohit, Surya, Tilak, all these players faced him in the nets. It was challenging to read him. We felt confident in giving him a chance in this match, and it proved to be an excellent decision," stated MI's former bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, as reported by The Indian Express.

Acquired for ₹30 lakh during the IPL mega auction, Puthur had no previous experience in competitive or domestic cricket, having played only three matches in the Kerala Cricket League, where he took just two wickets. Nevertheless, this highlights the effectiveness of MI's strong scouting network, which has previously unearthed talents like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, as well as promising players such as Nehal Wadhera and Tilak. Puthur may very well be the most surprising addition to this impressive roster.

It is a rare achievement for a young player to claim the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda in his first IPL match.

Mhambrey remarked, "What sets him apart is his uniqueness. In this format, it is essential to have a distinct approach. We have seen Chinaman bowlers like Kuldeep excel in the past, so our focus was on how to harness his potential."

He continued, "Our primary goal has always been to recognize potential above all else. During one of our trials, we identified his capabilities rather than concentrating on his previous cricket experience. It was solely about the promise he showed, which was evident today. Making his debut against CSK is no small feat, but the way he handled the pressure was commendable."
