Mumbai Indians' head coach Mahela Jayawardene provided insights regarding Rohit Sharma's injury, which resulted in his exclusion from the playing XI for the match against LSG on Friday. Rohit, who has participated as an Impact Player in the tournament thus far, sustained a knee injury during a training session and was unable to clear the fitness test conducted during the warm-up prior to the LSG match. This IPL season has been challenging for Rohit, as he has recorded scores of 0, 8, and 13 in the three matches he has played. In his absence, Mumbai opted for Will Jacks to partner with Ryan Rickelton at the top of the order, but the duo struggled to make an impact.

The MI head coach explained that Rohit experienced a knee injury that prevented him from bearing weight on it, causing him discomfort during the fitness assessment before the game.

"Rohit sustained a hit to his knee in the IT band area. He attempted to bat yesterday but was unable to put any weight on it. He underwent a fitness test early today, but found it uncomfortable to bat and put weight on the knee. Consequently, he felt he wasn't at 100% to participate in this match, which is why we took precautions," Jayawardene stated during the post-match press conference.

He indicated that the management and medical team would monitor Rohit's condition closely in the coming days for any positive developments regarding his fitness.

"We decided to give him a few more days to recover from this unfortunate incident that occurred during practice," he added.

‘Entirely up to us on a tactical basis’: Jayawardene on Impact Player

Rohit Sharma, who was replaced as captain of the Mumbai Indians last season, has been retained by the five-time champions for INR 16 crore. However, in the first three matches, he has been utilized as an impact player and did not participate in the field for the entire game.

Jayawardene provided a straightforward perspective on the former captain's role as an impact player, emphasizing that the management has the discretion to determine how to deploy their players.

"There isn't a significant difference between the impact player and a regular player; it's simply a matter of substituting one player for another. Essentially, we are operating with 12 players, so it shouldn't be overanalyzed. The decision regarding who we impact and who we substitute is entirely based on our tactical considerations," he stated.
