Manchester City finds itself in a challenging situation, having recorded eight losses, two draws, and only one victory in their last eleven matches. Pep Guardiola's tenure appeared promising until the EFL Cup Round of 16 clash against Tottenham, which resulted in a disappointing 2-1 defeat, exposing vulnerabilities in a City squad missing Rodri. What was anticipated to be a straightforward opportunity to regain form turned into another setback, as City succumbed to Bournemouth with a 1-2 loss, followed by a heavy 1-4 defeat to Sporting CP.

As they returned to domestic competition, City's struggles persisted, suffering defeats against Brighton and Tottenham. A 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the Champions League offered a glimmer of hope, but this was quickly extinguished by a 0-2 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. However, City managed to secure a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, albeit briefly lifting spirits.

Unfortunately, this moment of triumph was fleeting, as they drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace and subsequently faced consecutive losses to Juventus and Manchester United.

In response to Rodri's injury, Guardiola appears to have devised a contingency plan. Interestingly, he does not seem inclined to pursue a defensive midfielder, opting instead to utilize Ilkay Gundogan in that capacity. Reports from Tuttosport suggest that Guardiola is considering a winter transfer for Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, aiming to address the leadership gap left by Rodri's absence.

According to media sources, Guardiola is contemplating a six-month loan for Messi to help realign the team as the second half of the season approaches. Currently with Inter Miami, Messi's potential transfer is reportedly supported by co-owner David Beckham, who is unlikely to obstruct such a move. Since joining Miami in July 2023, Messi has participated in 39 matches, netting 34 goals and providing 18 assists.
