In his preseason match for Inter Miami, Lionel Messi encountered the Mexican team Club America at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. As is customary, the Argentine superstar was met with adoration from fans; however, this occasion was marked by a different sentiment, as many Mexican supporters appeared displeased due to his goal against their national team during the 2022 World Cup.

When Messi found the net in the first half, a significant portion of Club America’s fans began to chant a song that allegedly contained homophobic undertones directed at him. This incident occurred in the 34th minute, to which Messi responded with a gesture that highlighted the disparity in World Cup victories, noting Argentina's three titles compared to Mexico's none.

Following the match, Inter Miami's newly appointed head coach, Javier Mascherano, who is also a former teammate of Messi, remarked, “I have not had a conversation with Leo, so I do not attribute much significance to the celebration.”

He continued, “I believe we have more pressing matters to address. Logically, I have faced Mexican teams and the national team, and we are aware that they often exhibit hostility towards us Argentinians. Additionally, I think the wounds from the World Cup are still fresh.”

Inter Miami triumphed over Club America in a penalty shootout after the match concluded in a 2-2 stalemate. Messi equalized following Henry Martin's opening goal for America in the 31st minute. Israel Reyes then put Club America ahead 2-1 in the second half, only for Tomas Aviles to score a stoppage-time equalizer.

Messi is currently in the twilight of his career with Miami. Despite guiding his team to the top of the regular season standings, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. He concluded the season as the club's all-time leading scorer, finishing the regular campaign with 20 goals and 16 assists. Furthermore, he was honoured as the MLS Most Valuable Player for the regular season.
