Like Father, Like Son: Aussie Great’s Heir Smashes Ton in Sheffield Shield Final
3 days ago | 5 Views
A significant event unfolded during the ongoing Sheffield Shield final, as Jake Lehmann etched his name in history with a century at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide. The South Australian batsman, son of former Australian player and coach Darren Lehmann, is striving to lead South Australia to its first Sheffield Shield victory since 1996—a team in which his father played.
Jake Lehmann faces considerable expectations. His father, Lehmann Sr., holds the record for the most centuries in Sheffield Shield cricket, with 45, and has amassed an unparalleled number of runs. This marks only the younger Lehmann's 13th century, yet it is his third in consecutive matches and undoubtedly the most significant.
South Australia aims to break a nearly thirty-year drought in the Sheffield Shield. The Redbacks have shown remarkable dominance during the league stage this season, showcasing impressive performances throughout. However, after a rocky start in the final against Queensland, they required a standout contribution, and who better to deliver than the son of their most celebrated batsman?
With the team at 65-4 and chasing a first innings target of 95, Lehmann made sure that Brendan Doggett's exceptional bowling effort was not in vain. The 32-year-old batsman scored 102, forming solid partnerships with the lower order and leading South Australia to a 176-run advantage in the first innings.
Reflecting on the challenge of living up to his father's legacy in the iconic red South Australian cap, Jake remarked prior to the final: "I always anticipated this would be the case, and while it can be challenging at times, he has been an excellent mentor and never pressured me into pursuing cricket."
"If I could be even half as good as my father…"
Lehmann stepped down from the captaincy of the SACA this year following a series of disappointing performances, both personally and for the team. Nathan McSweeney took over and led the team to its best finish in several years, while Lehmann himself has maintained an average of over 42 this season, particularly excelling in crucial moments during March.
"One of the insights I gained early on was that if I could be even half as good as my father, I would be doing well, and I have adhered to that philosophy recently," Lehmann shared with cricket.com.au.
"It alleviates that pressure, as there is certainly external pressure. However, internally, between my father, my family, and me, it’s not present," he added.
In response to the significant deficit, Queensland concluded day two at 177/3, holding a slender one-run lead. Marnus Labuschagne contributed 61 runs but was dismissed before the end of the day. South Australia is now heavily favored to win and will aim to secure the match, allowing another Lehmann to claim the prestigious Sheffield Shield.
