The much-anticipated International Masters League (IML) has revealed its stunning trophy in the presence of legendary figures who will captain their respective teams in the inaugural season. Among those present were India's cricket legend and Bharat Ratna recipient Sachin Tendulkar, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, West Indies great Brian Lara, England's World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, Australia's Shane Watson, and South Africa's Jonty Rhodes, who represented captain Jacques Kallis, during the Captains’ Day event held at the DY Patil University campus on Wednesday.
The IML aims to captivate cricket enthusiasts by delivering an exhilarating experience filled with high-energy action, showcasing the sport's luminaries. The opening match of the IML will feature India Masters facing off against Sri Lanka Masters at the D.Y. Patil Stadium on Saturday, February 22.
Sachin Tendulkar, captain of India Masters, expressed, "Returning to the cricket field feels like coming back to the place that has shaped my identity as an athlete. Reconnecting with my former teammates and colleagues, reminiscing about our shared experiences, and celebrating our treasured memories is incredibly meaningful. My excitement today mirrors that of my debut when I had the honour of representing our nation, and I am confident that every player shares this fervour to once again engage in the game we all cherish."
Brian Lara, captain of West Indies Masters, stated: “I am genuinely thrilled to be back in India, a nation that has always felt like a second home to me. The vibrant culture and the enthusiasm of its diverse fans create an unforgettable atmosphere for playing. I eagerly anticipate taking the field once more with old friends in the International Masters League and look forward to rekindling some of our storied rivalries. The stage is set, the energy is palpable, and I am ready for the competition!”
Kumar Sangakkara, the captain of Sri Lanka Masters, expressed his enthusiasm for the competition, stating, "I am thrilled to participate in this remarkable event. Cricket holds a significant place in my life, and the opportunity to play alongside some of the sport's most esteemed ambassadors enhances the significance of the IML. I eagerly anticipate the opening match against India Masters, which promises to be an exhilarating contest."
Shane Watson, captain of Australia Masters, remarked, "India has always been one of my preferred countries, and the affection and support I have received here are unparalleled. The introduction of the International Masters League trophy marks the beginning of a cricketing event that will honour the sport's rich heritage.
During the Captains’ Day announcement, it was revealed that entry to the stadium for the opening match would be complimentary for students and senior citizens. Students must present a valid identification card from their current educational institution, while senior citizens are required to show a government-issued senior citizen card. Access will be denied at the entrance if valid and authentic identification is not provided.
