New Delhi: Meg Lanning and Annabel Sutherland played pivotal roles in propelling the Delhi Capitals to the second position in the points table, following a seven-wicket victory over the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) at Kotambi Stadium on Wednesday, marking an exhilarating conclusion to the Vadodara leg of the tournament.

Delhi Capitals have now secured two wins out of three matches, while the UP Warriorz are still in search of their first victory after two games.

Shafali Verma set a solid foundation with a brisk 26 runs off 16 balls, but UPW captain Deepti Sharma made a breakthrough after the Powerplay. Lanning's impressive innings of 69 runs from 49 balls provided stability to the Capitals' batting lineup. Although Jemimah Rodrigues was dismissed without scoring, the chase appeared manageable until the Warriorz mounted a comeback.

After Lanning's departure with the score at 119/3, it was the all-rounders Sutherland (41 not out) and Marizanne Kapp (29 not out) who guided the team to successfully chase down the target of 167 runs with just one ball remaining.

Earlier, Kiran Navgire gave the Warriorz the explosive start they needed, scoring a rapid half-century off just 24 balls—the fastest by a UPW player, surpassing Grace Harris's 25-ball fifty against the Gujarat Giants in 2023—before falling to Sutherland in the following over.

Despite the promising start provided by Navgire, the Warriorz faltered, collapsing from 66/0 to 82/4 within 9.4 overs. Shweta Sehrawat (37) and Grace Harris (12) managed to add 36 runs for the fifth wicket.

However, it was the West Indies all-rounder Chinelle Henry, making her WPL debut, who provided a crucial boost to the innings with a quickfire 33 runs off 15 balls.

In the final three overs, the Capitals' bowlers mounted a strong defense, allowing only 16 runs and restricting the UP Warriorz to a total of 166/7. Sutherland emerged as the standout bowler, recording figures of 2/26 from her four overs.

The Warriorz will undoubtedly lament the runs they failed to capitalize on towards the end of their innings, but the dropped catches and misfields during the chase will likely weigh heavily on their minds.
