Former national coach and Dronacharya awardee U. Vimal Kumar has voiced his concerns regarding the recent lackluster performances of Indian badminton players on prominent international platforms. The Indian badminton contingent had a disappointing experience at the Paris Olympics, returning home without any medals. Although Lakshya Sen provided a glimmer of hope by reaching the semifinals, he was ultimately defeated by Viktor Axelsen. In the recent All England Open quarterfinals, he faced a similar outcome, losing to the Chinese sixth seed Li Shifeng in a match that lasted 45 minutes. The Indian challenge concluded at the All England Open when the women's doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also fell short, losing to the Chinese second seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning with scores of 14-21, 10-21 in a 46-minute match.
U. Vimal Kumar has expressed disappointment with the development of Indian badminton players, specifically highlighting those who have shown potential but lack the necessary consistency.
“Arun George and Satish Karunakaran have demonstrated significant promise, yet they have not managed to break into the top 30, which would allow them to participate regularly in Super Series events. While they achieve commendable victories, their inconsistency remains a concern. They must make substantial progress in the coming year, as many promising players from other countries are emerging. At their age, they should be securing tournament victories by now. Ayush Shetty has recorded some impressive wins and has entered the top 40, which is a positive development. Given that he is only 19, he has the potential to become a major star. Tharun Mannepalli is another player who shows promise,” Vimal Kumar stated in an interview with Sportstar.
