The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) experienced a disappointing return to their home ground in IPL 2025, both in terms of performance and off-field activities. On Tuesday, April 1, they faced an eight-wicket defeat against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. As reported by MyKhel.com, LSG officials did not attend the post-match presentation ceremony, leading to speculation regarding their dissatisfaction with the team's performance in their inaugural home match of the 18th season.
During the match, PBKS, under the captaincy of an unbeaten Shreyas Iyer (52* off 30 balls), successfully chased down LSG’s modest score of 171 with 22 balls remaining, bolstered by impressive innings from Prabhsimran Singh (69 off 34) and Nehal Wadhera (43* off 25). LSG's batting lineup struggled early on, collapsing to 35/3, with captain Rishabh Pant scoring only 2 runs from 5 balls. Although Nicholas Pooran (44 off 30) and Ayush Badoni (41 off 33) attempted to stabilize the innings, the home team ultimately failed to set a competitive target, leaving their supporters disheartened.
The report indicated that one of the LSG promoters was anticipated to be present at the post-match presentation, as is customary for the home team. However, no representatives from LSG attended, despite some officials being seen on the field immediately after the match concluded. This absence raised questions about the franchise's leadership and their reluctance to face scrutiny following the loss.
In response, LSG has categorically denied any intentional snub. A senior official from the franchise informed MyKhel that there was no prior arrangement for their attendance at the ceremony. "Mr. Sanjiv Goenka was on the field, and there was no such arrangement at all," the official stated, refuting the speculation. The official also noted that Goenka typically does not participate in post-match ceremonies. Nevertheless, the report cited other sources indicating that Goenka's name was initially included on the guest list for the ceremony but was later removed, raising further inquiries.
A source contended that LSG should have dispatched one of their franchise officials to the post-match presentation, emphasizing what they view as a violation of protocol.
PBKS off to a dream start
In the meantime, PBKS showcased a commanding performance, securing their position in second place on the IPL 2025 points table with their second consecutive victory.
During the post-match presentation, which was attended solely by players, LSG captain Rishabh Pant acknowledged the team's shortcomings. "We were 20-25 runs short, but that’s part of the game," he remarked, noting that the team is still acclimating to the conditions at Ekana Stadium. Additionally, LSG mentor Zaheer Khan voiced his dissatisfaction with the pitch, indicating that it did not provide the expected advantage for the home team, further exacerbating their difficulties.
With two losses in three matches, LSG is now under increasing pressure to regroup before their next game. The perceived oversight has intensified the narrative surrounding a franchise facing early-season hurdles, both on and off the field. As the IPL 2025 season unfolds, attention will be focused on how LSG’s leadership addresses this recent controversy.
