Kuldeep Yadav Responds to Michael Clarke’s Advice with Facts: ‘For the Last 3-4 Years…’

Kuldeep Yadav is experiencing a resurgence in his career. The left-arm wrist-spinner, who faced a decline a few years back due to injuries and exclusion from India's squads, has found his rhythm under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. In the recently concluded Champions Trophy, Kuldeep distinguished himself as India's third-highest wicket-taker, claiming seven wickets, trailing only Varun Chakaravarthy and Mohammed Shami. His outstanding performance earned him recognition from the ICC, propelling him to third place in the ODI bowler rankings.
Kuldeep has become Rohit's preferred spinner, even beyond ODIs. Michael Clarke, the coach who led Australia to World Cup victory, believes that Kuldeep should regularly participate in all three formats for India. Clarke's confidence is rooted in his assessment that Kuldeep is currently at the peak of his bowling prowess. He acknowledges the fierce competition for spots in the team, noting that only a few players like Virat Kohli, Rohit, or Ravindra Jadeja can secure a permanent place. Nevertheless, Clarke asserts that Kuldeep is essential for all formats.
"Having watched you in the Champions Trophy, I believe you are bowling at your best. This is my personal view, but I think you should be included in all three formats for India. I understand the challenge, given the number of spinners competing for spots," he shared with Kuldeep during a conversation on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
Kuldeep expressed gratitude towards Clarke, recognizing that he is likely in the best form of his career. After a period where he went two years without playing a Test match for India despite achieving a five-wicket haul, Kuldeep's fortunes shifted in 2022 when Rohit assumed the captaincy. He took 19 wickets in the Test series against England before being sidelined by a groin injury, later diagnosed as a hernia. Since his return, Kuldeep has been making significant strides, aiming to establish himself as India's leading spinner.
Kuldeep's honest reply
"I think I have been bowling really well from the last 3-4 years. After the injury, when I came back, what I wanted to change in my bowling was to understand the batter better. I always had the rhythm. A lot depends on the surface as well. I bowled really well in the Champions Trophy. We were playing with 4 spinners so it is very difficult to get wickets – someone may always pick more wickets than you – but I thought I was right on the target, bowling wicket-to-wicket and showing more variations," he told Clarke.
"Although I thought the wicket wasn't great for spinners – it was slow – but it was very tough to produce that wicket. I underwent a hernia surgery in November so it was very difficult to come back and find the same rhythm going. I played a couple of games against England before the Champions Trophy and I personally feel that it was a good tournament for us and me."
