Krunal Pandya Calls Hardik His Inspirational Source: A Testament to Resilience
2 months ago | 5 Views
Krunal Pandya, aged 33, has distinguished himself as a prominent leader for Baroda during the 2024-25 domestic season. His performance has been outstanding, leading Baroda to the knockout stages of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Ranji Trophy. The all-rounder has consistently demonstrated his ability to excel in crucial moments, with his contributions with both bat and ball serving as compelling evidence of his impact this season.
Under Krunal's captaincy, Baroda reached the semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where they were defeated by the eventual champions, Mumbai, led by Shreyas Iyer. Notably, during this tournament, Baroda set a record for the highest T20 team total, amassing 349 runs for 5 wickets against Sikkim. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Baroda advanced to the quarter-finals but fell short against Karnataka, the eventual winners, captained by Mayank Agarwal. Throughout the premier 50-over domestic competition, Krunal Pandya accumulated 256 runs and took 11 wickets.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the all-rounder made significant contributions with the bat and also added to his wicket tally. Currently, Baroda is leading the Elite A standings in the Ranji Trophy with 27 points from five matches, having already secured a place in the knockout rounds.
Baroda's next challenge will be against Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy. In anticipation of this important match, Hindustan Times interviewed Krunal regarding his views on leadership, Baroda's performance this season, and his contributions. The all-rounder, who is set to represent RCB in the IPL, also shared valuable insights into the qualities that define his brother, Hardik Pandya, as a cricketer.
Krunal expressed admiration for his younger brother, highlighting how Hardik has navigated recent challenges to establish himself as a decisive match-winner. Despite facing criticism during IPL 2024, where he was booed at the Wankhede Stadium as captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik managed to turn the situation around, ultimately winning over the same fans with an exceptional bowling display that led India to victory in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa.
You have been available for Baroda throughout this season and have been in exceptional form in both Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq. How do you rate your performance so far this season?
As the captain, I express my satisfaction with Baroda's performance thus far. It is truly gratifying to witness Baroda advance to the knockout stages in all three formats within a single season, marking a historic milestone for our team. We are currently undergoing a transitional phase, and I believe we are making commendable progress. The outcomes across all formats instil confidence that we are moving in the right direction.
Traditionally, Baroda has been a formidable presence in the domestic arena. My objective is to restore the esteemed legacy of Baroda's cricketing prowess. We possess a group of exceptionally talented young players. As both captain and mentor, my responsibility is to foster a style of fearless cricket that will define Baroda in the future.
Last year, we faced several injuries, including my own, which adversely affected our performance. I felt a sense of disappointment when we were defeated by Mumbai in the Rani Trophy quarterfinals. That moment marked the beginning of our renewed commitment. As a team, we vowed to embark on a fresh start this season. Our approach to the games this year, along with the resulting performances, reinforces our belief in our process.
Is missing the Syed Mushtaq and Vijay Hazare Trophies a big setback for Baroda this season, as the side played like a unified unit and looked set to go all the way?
I would not characterize this as a setback. I firmly believe in the importance of the process. By adhering to the established procedures, we can expect to see positive outcomes. As previously stated, we are laying the groundwork to ensure we are prepared for the future. Significant effort has been invested in the lead-up to the season, engaging all stakeholders, including officials from the Baroda Cricket Association, selectors, coaches, support staff, and players.
As we navigate this transitional period, I can confidently assert that Baroda is reclaiming its historical prominence, having advanced to the semifinals in the SMAT, the quarterfinals in the VHT, and finishing at the top of our group in the Ranji Trophy within a single season.
I have to ask you about Hardik. Over the last few years, we have shown his great mental strength and resolve. He had a difficult time last year but still managed to come out on top and make India win the T20 World Cup. How do you view your brother's resolve?
Hardik is a driven and composed individual. Each of his comebacks has surpassed the challenges he faced, demonstrating his resilience. He is a valuable member of the Indian team and its leadership structure. Serving as a source of inspiration, he exemplifies the qualities that young cricketers should aspire to. In a world filled with distractions, maintaining focus and self-confidence is crucial; with these attributes, one can remain steadfast in the pursuit of their objectives.
Do you reckon captaincy brings out the best in you? How important is it for a leader to be inclusive?
Serving as captain at Baroda and leading LSG during the last IPL season has been a rewarding experience. With extensive cricketing experience, I have gained a deeper understanding of my own game, the various situations that arise, and the dynamics within the team. My objective is to apply these insights to create opportunities for my teammates to excel and secure victories.
I thrive on instinct and have confidence in my abilities. Furthermore, I believe that effective communication is fundamental to my leadership style, and I prefer to maintain a straightforward approach. My passion for the sport drives me to pursue victory, regardless of the circumstances. This fervour can sometimes manifest as aggression, as my commitment to the game is profound. Ultimately, I view cricket as a team endeavour, and for me, achieving success as a collective is paramount, overshadowing individual accolades.
Baroda next takes on Maharashtra, Jammu, and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy. How do you see these contests? Is your goal firmly now to make Baroda win the Ranji Trophy and create history?
Certainly, we are assured in our abilities and will strive to perform at our highest level. Although Baroda has advanced to the knockout stage in the Ranji Trophy, the upcoming two matches are vital for us to regain our momentum in the longer format of the game. These matches will occur in quick succession, making it essential for us to come together as a cohesive unit and approach the field with our distinctive style of cricket.
