Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for Grandmaster Koneru Humpy on Sunday following her victory at the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship. Humpy secured the title in New York, demonstrating remarkable resilience after facing significant challenges. Modi remarked that Humpy's exceptional talent and perseverance serve as an inspiration to millions, deeming this achievement "historic."
The year 2024 has proven to be a landmark year for Indian chess, as just days prior, D Gukesh Dommaraju was named the World Chess Champion after defeating China's Ding Liren.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi stated, "Congratulations to @humpy_koneru on winning the 2024 FIDE Women’s World Rapid Championship! Her grit and brilliance continue to inspire millions. This victory is particularly historic as it marks her second world rapid championship title, making her the only Indian to accomplish this remarkable achievement."
Joyful and enthusiastic
Koneru Humpy has secured the title for the second time, having previously won the competition in 2019.
Upon her victory, Koneru Humpy expressed her joy, stating, "I’m very happy and excited because this is my second world Rapid title. I also won in 2019."
Koneru Humpy gained significant attention in 2002 when she became the youngest woman to earn the title of Grandmaster, achieving this milestone at the age of 15 years, 1 month, and 27 days. This record was later surpassed by China's Hou Yifan. Additionally, Koneru Humpy holds the distinction of being the first female Grandmaster from India.
She is also a gold medalist in various prestigious events, including the Olympiad, Asian Games, and Asian Championship. Currently, she holds the title of Women’s Rapid World Chess Champion.
In 2006, Humpy became only the second female chess player, following Susan Polgar, to surpass the 2600 Elo rating threshold.
