"Kohli's Struggles: Former Coach Questions Current Staff's Ability to Advise"
2 months ago | 5 Views
India's lacklustre performances following their triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup have intensified scrutiny on several key figures, particularly captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The ongoing issues affecting the Indian batting lineup during the series against New Zealand and Australia have placed Gambhir's coaching team under significant examination. Bharat Arun, the former bowling coach who played a pivotal role in establishing a dominant pace attack for the Indian team, expressed concerns that the current coaches may lack the authority or confidence to provide guidance to prominent players such as Virat Kohli.
Arun noted that Kohli tends to challenge the advice of coaches when they suggest alterations to his approach, given his substantial past success with his established routine. "Virat will inquire when you propose changes, as he is the world’s top batter. He will question the rationale behind your suggestion, asking what errors he has made. He scored runs, so why was this not mentioned earlier?" Arun stated during a YouTube interview with former cricketer S. Badrinath.
He reminisced about how Ravi Shastri's guidance significantly impacted Kohli's performance after a disappointing tour of England in 2014. “Shastri advised him, ‘You should position yourself on the leg stump since the ball swings in England. You cannot remain here; instead, stand on the middle stump and step out of the crease. You must command the crease.’ Kohli implemented this strategy in Australia and achieved four centuries,” Arun disclosed.
"To convey such advice to Kohli, one must possess the stature and confidence that Ravi Shastri had, which I believe the current coaching staff lacks," Arun concluded.
India aims to overcome its disappointing performance
Since Gambhir assumed the role of head coach following Rahul Dravid's tenure after the T20 World Cup, India has experienced a series of setbacks, including their first ODI series loss to Sri Lanka since 1997, a 3-0 defeat in a Test series at home against New Zealand—resulting in several undesirable milestones—and the relinquishment of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in ten years.
India has now revealed its squad for the forthcoming T20I series against England. Mohammed Shami, whose absence was felt during the tour of Australia, is set to return, while Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill have not been selected. Shami last represented India during the ODI World Cup in 2023; he made his return to competitive cricket last year in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and subsequently participated in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal.
