Kohli and Rohit Advised to Emulate Yuvraj: A Reminder of Their Place in Cricket

Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has called on batting icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to participate in domestic cricket, specifically the Ranji Trophy, to regain their form. Following a disappointing tour of Australia where India faced a 1-3 defeat, both players have struggled with their performance in red-ball cricket. Yograj emphasized that no player, regardless of their stature—citing legends like Viv Richards and Don Bradman—can be considered bigger than the game itself. He believes that their involvement in domestic matches would not only aid their personal performance but also inspire confidence among younger players who would benefit from playing alongside them. While Rohit has confirmed his participation in Mumbai's upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, Kohli has opted out due to a neck sprain, marking his absence from the tournament since 2012. Yograj highlighted that when senior players engage in domestic cricket, it fosters a supportive environment for emerging talents, reinforcing the idea that true growth comes from playing competitive matches rather than training alone.

‘Yuvraj Singh used to go and play Ranji Trophy’

Yograj Singh has emphasized the importance of domestic cricket for star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, urging them to follow the example set by his son, Yuvraj Singh. He pointed out that Yuvraj consistently participated in Ranji Trophy matches whenever he was not included in the Indian squad, which helped him maintain form and confidence. Yograj believes that both Kohli and Rohit should take advantage of their break periods to play domestic cricket, as simply practising in the nets is insufficient for regaining their competitive edge. He stated, "You can never become bigger than the game," highlighting that even legendary players like Viv Richards and Don Bradman were not above the sport. Yograj suggested that a fitness camp could also benefit players during this time. While Rohit has confirmed his participation in an upcoming Ranji match, Kohli has opted out due to a neck injury, raising questions about their commitment to domestic play as they seek to improve their performances ahead of future international competitions.
