Kohli Makes History! Surpasses Azharuddin’s ODI Catching Record vs Pakistan

Virat Kohli holds numerous records in One Day Internationals (ODIs), and at the age of 36, he has now achieved the distinction of having the highest number of catches by an Indian fielder in the 50-over format. On Sunday, during the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 Group A match against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium, the former captain of India surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin's record of 156 catches.

In the overall context of ODI cricket, only Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene (218) and Australia's Ricky Ponting (160) have recorded more outfield catches than Kohli.

Currently, Virat Kohli has amassed 157 catches. Other notable Indian players on this list include Mohammad Azharuddin (156), Sachin Tendulkar (140), Rahul Dravid (124), and Suresh Raina (102).

Kohli achieved this milestone in the 47th over of Pakistan's innings when Naseem Shah attempted an aerial shot. The ball was directed towards long-on, prompting Kohli to sprint in from the boundary. He successfully executed a low catch, leading to the fall of Pakistan's eighth wicket. This catch also marked Kuldeep Yadav's third wicket in the match, following his dismissals of Salman Ali Agha and Shaheen Shah Afridi earlier.

Will Virat get going with the bat?

Virat Kohli has recently faced challenges in scoring runs, and it will be intriguing to observe if he can regain his form during the upcoming match against Pakistan in Dubai.

In the match against Bangladesh, Kohli scored 22 runs before being dismissed by Rishad Hossain, marking the sixth consecutive instance in which a spinner has dismissed him.

Of these six dismissals, five have been at the hands of leg-spin bowlers. Kohli's performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy was also underwhelming, as he accumulated only 190 runs across nine innings.

This ongoing struggle prompted Kohli to reassess his approach, leading him to participate in a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Turning to the India-Pakistan match, Pakistan set a target of 241 runs before being all out, having won the toss and chosen to bat first.

Saud Shakeel was the standout performer for Pakistan, scoring 62 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets for India. This match is crucial for Pakistan, especially after their defeat to New Zealand in the opening match held in Karachi.
