Kohli Faces Scrutiny: Pietersen Urges Him to "Watch Joe Root" Following Dismissal

India checked off one important box before heading to Dubai next week for the Champions Trophy, thanks to Virat Kohli's half-century in the last match of the three-game ODI series against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, former England player Kevin Pietersen wasn't buying into the idea that Kohli was back in form, criticizing his dismissal by Adil Rashid for the second time in the series.
Kohli's performance had been a major worry for India as they approached the ICC tournament. After struggling in red-ball cricket, including a disappointing Ranji Trophy outing last month, he only managed five runs in the second ODI against England, where Rashid got him out. Kohli had missed the first match due to a swollen knee.
But on Wednesday, he made a strong comeback, scoring his 73rd ODI fifty and helping India set a challenging target of 357 runs for England.
While this innings was a big boost for India, Pietersen, during a mid-innings chat with Star Sports, expressed his frustration over Kohli getting out to Rashid for the 11th time in his career. He felt Kohli should have capitalized on the opportunity for a bigger score.
"He shouldn't be getting out to that ball. He's a much better player than that. And he will be kicking himself. That ball is bowled slowly through the air. So he shouldn't have been over-committed on the front foot. He should have played back to it. He should have punched it into the offside, and he would still have been batting and he probably would have gone on to get a big score," he said.
Virat Kohli advised to keep an eye on Joe Root
Pietersen took a closer look at the dismissal and pointed out that Joe Root would never fall victim to a ball like that, advising Kohli to pay attention to his peer.
“From the side view, you can see where it hits. It strikes the top of the bat, right at the splice. That shows he misjudged the length. It’s not even close to the sweet spot. Just take a look at it,” he explained.
“You can clearly see where the ball made contact. His bat is way out in front of his pad, which indicates he got the length wrong. He’s too skilled to get out like that. He shouldn’t be giving Rashid that opportunity. Just watch Joe Root; he would never commit like that on the front foot. No chance.”
