Kohli Engages Delhi Fans in Cheer Contest, Sparks Laughter
24 days ago | 5 Views
The Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) initially planned to accommodate approximately 10,000 fans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium for Delhi's final group match in the Ranji Trophy against Railways. However, the return of Virat Kohli to domestic cricket after a 12-year hiatus significantly altered those expectations. The DDCA first opened the 6,000-seat 'Gautam Gambhir Stand' for spectators, but due to an overwhelming turnout, with fans arriving as early as 5 a.m. to catch a glimpse of the cricketing icon, they were compelled to also open the 'Bishan Singh Bedi Stand,' which has a capacity of around 11,000.
Although Kohli did not bat after Delhi captain Ayush Badoni chose to bowl in this pivotal group match, he actively engaged the crowd with various gestures, expressing his gratitude for their support.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Kohli, while fielding in the slip position, initiated a friendly competition between two sections of the crowd to see who could cheer the loudest. He played the role of moderator, raising his hands to encourage the right section, which erupted in excitement, before asking them to quiet down and inviting the left section to cheer, all while sharing a laugh with one of his teammates.
At 36 years old, Kohli appeared to favour the right section of the crowd, giving them a thumbs-up, and then turned to the left section, making a gesture that inquired if they had eaten.
Railways score 241 in 1st innings
Wicketkeeper-batter Upendra Yadav scored 95 runs off 177 balls, complemented by a steady half-century from No. 7 Karn Sharma, enabling Railways to recover from a challenging start and conclude their first innings with a total of 241 runs.
Left-arm pacer Siddhant Sharma quickly put the visitors in a difficult position, reducing them to 21 for two by the sixth over. Subsequently, Navdeep Saini dismissed opener Vivek Singh for a duck on the very next delivery. Following a brief period of resistance from M Saif, Money Grewal struck twice in consecutive deliveries, leaving Railways at 66 for five.
However, just as the spectators anticipated witnessing Kohli's batting, Upendra and Karn thwarted the Delhi bowlers with their century partnership. For the home team, Saini and Sumit Mathur stood out as the leading bowlers, each claiming three wickets.
