"Kohli Didn't Favor Rayudu": Ex-India Star Reveals Controversial 2019 World Cup Snub

The 2019 ODI World Cup was marked by significant drama for Team India, culminating in a semi-final loss to New Zealand. This match also served as MS Dhoni’s final appearance, as he subsequently announced his retirement from international cricket. Prior to the tournament's commencement, controversy surrounded the Indian team selection, particularly with the exclusion of Ambati Rayudu, a player well-regarded by fans. In an interview with Lallantop, former Indian cricketer and 2007 T20 World Cup champion Robin Uthappa reflected on Rayudu’s contentious omission, attributing it to the influence of captain Virat Kohli.

Uthappa criticized Kohli for his treatment of the esteemed Yuvraj Singh following his recovery from cancer. He stated, “If Virat Kohli had a personal dislike for someone or deemed them unfit, they were excluded from the team. Ambati Rayudu exemplifies this situation. It is disheartening. While everyone has their preferences, it is unjust to close the door on a player who has been so close to selection. Rayudu had his World Cup attire and kit bag ready at home, believing he would participate in the tournament. Yet, he was ultimately denied that opportunity. In my view, that was not fair,” Uthappa disclosed during his revealing interview.

Virat Kohli's key role

Rayudu was not summoned to the national team even after the injury of opener Shikhar Dhawan. This situation persisted following Vijay Shankar's injury as well. In the meantime, Rayudu expressed his sentiments on social media without reservation. In a subsequent interview, he disclosed that he did not have a good rapport with former chief selector MSK Prasad, who held the position during the 2019 World Cup.

In response, Prasad remarked that the selection committee included other selectors, and the captain also played a significant role in the decision-making process.

On May 29, 2023, Rayudu announced his retirement from all formats of Indian cricket. His last appearance in India was for the Chennai Super Kings, for whom he re-signed in 2022 for ₹6.75 crores. Rayudu achieved the remarkable feat of winning the IPL trophy six times, making him one of only two players, alongside Rohit Sharma, to accomplish this. He was also a member of the Indian team that secured victory in the 2018 Asia Cup.
