King Kohli Strikes Again! Becomes Fastest to 14,000 ODI Runs, Surpassing Sachin

Virat Kohli has once again secured his place in the annals of cricket history by becoming the fastest player to surpass the 14,000-run milestone in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The Indian cricket icon achieved this remarkable feat during a thrilling Champions Trophy match against Pakistan on Sunday, requiring only 15 runs to reach the landmark prior to the game. Kohli reached this milestone with a boundary off Haris Rauf, further solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest players in the fifty-over format.

What makes Kohli's accomplishment particularly impressive is the speed at which he has accumulated these runs. He reached the 14,000-run mark in a mere 287 innings, eclipsing the previous record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved the milestone in 350 innings. The only other player to have surpassed this significant figure is Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara.

While Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs in ODIs with 18,426, Kohli is closing in on Sangakkara's total of 14,234 runs. With another match remaining in India's Champions Trophy group stage against New Zealand, and potentially two additional matches if India advances to the semi-finals and finals, Kohli has the opportunity to surpass Sangakkara and become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history.

Kohli made his ODI debut in 2008 and has since participated in 299 matches in the fifty-over format. During the 2023 World Cup, he broke Tendulkar's long-standing record for the most centuries in ODIs, scoring his 50th century during the semi-final against New Zealand. Notably, this was also his last three-figure score in the format, as he has played eight ODIs since then.

In recent months, Kohli has faced challenges in his form, particularly in red-ball cricket. However, upon his return to ODIs earlier this month, he managed to score a half-century against England in a bilateral series, although he was dismissed early in India's Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh.

A day of records for Kohli

This is not the only record Kohli achieved during the match against Pakistan. During the first innings, Kohli also eclipsed former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin to take the most catches for the side in ODIs.

Kohli was tied with Azharuddin (156) coming into the clash with the arch-rivals and took two catches during the match to go past the former captain.
