Kevin Pietersen Plays Down DC Hype After RCB Win: ‘IPL Isn’t a Sprint’

Delhi Capitals' impressive performance in IPL 2025 continued on Thursday night with a commanding six-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru, marking their fourth consecutive win. Despite the team's remarkable unbeaten streak, mentor Kevin Pietersen adopted a measured approach, encouraging both fans and players to maintain focus on the larger objectives.

Pietersen's message combined both caution and celebration. The former England captain recognized the team's current success but emphasized the importance of remaining composed as the group stage approaches its critical juncture.

“Just a quick reminder - the IPL is a marathon, not a sprint,” Pietersen posted on X after Delhi secured their victory in style.

“While it’s fantastic that we’re performing so well, we all understand that the most significant matches are in May! It’s truly wonderful to be winning for our @DelhiCapitals supporters. A special shoutout to our young star, Vippi! He is quite an impressive young man!”

Delhi's recent victory was largely attributed to a masterful performance by KL Rahul. Following his impressive 77 against Chennai, Rahul finished the match not out with 93 runs from 53 deliveries, demonstrating composure as he steadied the innings after an early struggle from the top order. He and Tristan Stubbs, who contributed an unbeaten 38 runs, formed a crucial partnership of 111 runs, leading Delhi to a total of 169-4 with 14 balls remaining.

Previously, it was the 21-year-old wrist spinner Vipraj Nigam, referred to as “Vippi” in Pietersen’s post, who captured attention with an impressive bowling performance. Together with Kuldeep Yadav, Nigam effectively dismantled Bengaluru’s middle-order, claiming four wickets for only 35 runs. This exceptional display warranted the special recognition from Pietersen.

Bengaluru began their innings with enthusiasm, driven by Phil Salt’s explosive 37 runs off 17 balls and a remarkable 30-run over against Mitchell Starc. However, Salt’s unusual run-out, followed by a collapse triggered by spin bowling, disrupted their momentum. Although Tim David’s unbeaten 37 provided some dignity to the score, it ultimately fell short.

Currently, the Delhi Capitals sit second in the standings, tied on points with the Gujarat Titans (8), but they have a game in hand. In contrast, RCB is positioned third, having suffered their second defeat at home. Notably, RCB has won all their away matches thus far, accumulating six points from five games.
