Kavya Maran Can't Believe Kamindu Mendis’ Miss on Free-Hit Despite SRH’s Win Over CSK

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, Friday night brought happiness on several levels — a first-ever victory at Chepauk in the IPL and a commanding display from their bowlers, keeping them in contention for the playoffs. However, the game also featured a fleeting moment involving team owner Kavya Maran, which has gone viral on social media.
As Hyderabad was smoothly moving towards their goal of 155 against Chennai Super Kings, a rather irritating incident involving SRH batter Kamindu Mendis frustrated Maran during the 16th over of the innings. CSK's Noor Ahmad overstepped, and Mendis, who was on 15 at that point, received a free hit. Yet instead of taking advantage, Mendis missed a delivered ball outside off stump while trying to slog. The ball spun away, eluding his swing and leading to a dot ball — something uncommon on a free hit.
While the occurrence elicited a momentary cheer from the CSK audience, it was Kavya Maran’s reaction that captivated attention. Cameras captured her lively response — a blend of surprise, disbelief, and annoyance. The incident became a sensation on social media.

Despite the missed free hit, Mendis compensated for it significantly. His steady 32 not out off 22 balls, in collaboration with 21-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy (19*), aided SRH in securing a five-wicket victory with eight balls remaining – marking their third win of the season.
Nevertheless, Harshal Patel and Pat Cummins established the groundwork for Hyderabad’s remarkable triumph earlier. Patel’s smart variations resulted in impressive statistics of 4/28, while captain Cummins bowled accurately to achieve figures of 2/21 across his four overs. Their joint efforts limited CSK to 154, with Dewald Brevis’s explosive 42 being the sole noteworthy innings.
Ishan Kishan then spearheaded the SRH chase with an energetic 44, but regular wickets provided CSK with slight hope. Mendis and Reddy guaranteed there were no late setbacks.
Captain Cummins encapsulated it well: “Our record against CSK isn’t that great so it’s good to fix that one up. We wish we finished that more comfortably, but overall, happy with that win. ”
