Karun Nair's Future: No More 'Reserve' Roles, Says Rohit
2 months ago | 5 Views
Karun Nair, aged 33, has become a prominent narrative of the season. Once overlooked in the selection process, he is now being considered a significant candidate for India's Champions Trophy squad, having transformed his prospects within a month.
WV Raman, the former head coach of the Indian women's team, asserts that if Nair is included in the squad, he should be part of the starting eleven. The 59-year-old believes that due to Nair's age, keeping him on the bench would be counterproductive.
Nair has demonstrated exceptional performance in the current Vijay Hazare Trophy, boasting an impressive average of 752 this season. He has been dismissed only once and has achieved five centuries in this edition of the tournament.
He has played a pivotal role in leading Vidarbha to the finals, where they are set to compete against Karnataka later today.
WV Raman expressed his views on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "#KarunNair is not in his teens to be in the reserves and watched by the team management. If he is picked, he plays given the form he is in, or if there is no slot for him, he should not be picked."
Karun Nair continues to script records
Karun Nair has been on a remarkable run in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Previously, he set the record for the most runs scored in List-A cricket without being dismissed.
Recently, Karun Nair played a blistering 88-run innings off just 44 deliveries in the semi-final against Maharashtra.
This season, he has registered scores of 112*, 44*, 163*, 111*, 112, 122*, and 88*.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Karun Nair, who is fondly remembered for his triple century against England in 2016, expressed his desire to make a comeback into the national team.
"Being a part of the Indian cricket team is an amazing opportunity that everyone aspires for. I, too, want to play for my country again," said Karun Nair.
"I will continue to do my best in every match to push for that chance. However, I understand that scoring runs is within my control, while the rest is not. My focus is on consistently performing in every game I play," he added.
