Karun Nair's Fairytale Comeback: Agarkar and BCCI Urged to Give Him a Shot for England Tests
10 days ago | 5 Views
In March 2017, Karun Nair last represented India in cricket. That same year, he managed to score a single fifty in the Indian Premier League. However, last night in Delhi marked a significant milestone as the seasoned Indian batter achieved his first IPL half-century in over 2500 days. While remaining out of the spotlight, Nair consistently focused on his performance, accumulating runs in abundance. After departing from Karnataka, he found a new home in Vidarbha, where he excelled in the previous domestic season, becoming the top run-scorer in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with an impressive total of 863 runs across nine matches.
Nair has made every effort to reclaim his position in the Indian national team, the same team for which he famously scored a Test triple-century, a feat only matched by the legendary Virender Sehwag. Despite his outstanding performance in the VHT, he was unable to secure a spot in India's Champions Trophy squad. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors for the BCCI, mentioned that Nair's name was considered, but that was as close as he got to selection.
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu expressed hope that the 33-year-old will receive the recognition he deserves. A few years back, Nair made headlines when he appealed for another opportunity in cricket. When that opportunity arose, he not only seized it but excelled beyond expectations, earning Rayudu's admiration.
Rayudu remarked, "It’s a testament to sheer persistence. Enduring the challenges that come with setbacks in Indian cricket is no easy feat. Many have faced similar struggles, but only a few have emerged successfully, and Karun Nair is one of them. Once you lose your way in the domestic circuit in India, making a comeback is incredibly difficult. The mental toll from various pressures can be overwhelming, and many will write you off."
Will Karun Nair travel to England?
That being said, a significant opportunity is presenting itself for Nair. With India scheduled to visit England for a five-Test series in the coming months, Nair could prove to be a valuable addition to the Men in Blue. The Indian batsmen's difficulties in Australia have been well-documented, particularly concerning the performances of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant. Given that England is expected to pose an even greater challenge, especially with the swinging Dukes ball, Rayudu has expressed his support for Nair's inclusion in the squad for the United Kingdom tour.
"Cricket is a fast-evolving sport, yet while the game progresses, Karun Nair has remained steadfast. He has consistently dedicated himself to learning, working hard, and maintaining the belief that he can make a comeback, particularly in Test cricket. I genuinely hope and would love to see him on that flight to England for the Test series," he remarked.
Notably, Nair was part of the Indian Test team during the 2018 tour of England, but he did not get the opportunity to play, remaining on the bench. In fact, Hanuma Vihari, who was later called up as a replacement for the injured Hardik Pandya, was selected to play ahead of Nair.
