Delhi Capitals batsman Karun Nair demonstrated his exceptional skills by taking on Jasprit Bumrah during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against the Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. In pursuit of 206 runs, Delhi Capitals faced an early setback with the dismissal of opening batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk on the very first ball, prompting Nair to enter the fray as an impact substitute at No. 3.

Making his debut in the IPL 2025 season, Nair displayed remarkable composure against the formidable Mumbai Indians' bowling attack, which included Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Trent Boult.

Nair showcased a diverse range of shots, effectively dominating the bowlers. During the power play, he faced nine deliveries from Bumrah, amassing 26 runs.

He reached his half-century in just 22 balls during the sixth over, raising his bat in acknowledgment of the cheers from the Delhi Capitals' dugout and the home crowd.

As Nair took on Bumrah in the powerplay, commentator Harsha Bhogle remarked, “Karun Nair is reading Bumrah like a textbook.”

The experienced batsman also excelled against Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult, giving Delhi Capitals a significant advantage during the power play. Nair's aggressive batting contributed to the team's impressive score of 72/1 in the powerplay, well ahead of the required run rate.

Ultimately, Nair was dismissed after scoring 89 runs off 40 balls, which included 12 fours and 5 sixes, with Mitchell Santner delivering a remarkable delivery that knocked over the stumps of the right-handed batsman.

Nair entered the IPL following a strong performance in domestic cricket, where he accumulated 779 runs for Vidarbha in nine matches during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, boasting an impressive average of 389.50.

Mumbai Indians post 205/5 in 20 overs

Earlier, Axar Patel, the captain of Delhi Capitals, won the toss and chose to field first.

Tilak Varma delivered an impressive performance, scoring 59 runs off 33 balls, which included 6 fours and 3 sixes, helping the Mumbai Indians reach a total of 205/5 in their allotted twenty overs. Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav contributed with scores of 41 and 40, respectively.

In the final overs, Naman Dhir accelerated the innings by scoring 38 runs off just 17 balls, pushing the Mumbai Indians' total beyond the 200-run threshold.

For the Delhi Capitals, both Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam took two wickets each.
