Karun Nair Rejoins IPL with National Comeback in Mind

New Delhi: Nine years ago, Karun Nair was a prominent figure in Indian cricket, having recently achieved the remarkable feat of becoming only the second Indian batsman to score a triple century in Test matches. This milestone occurred in 2016 when he was a member of the Delhi Daredevils, now rebranded as the Delhi Capitals.

Fast forward to 2025, and Nair has rejoined the same franchise after being acquired for ₹50 lakh during the IPL mega-auction. His return to the league, following a five-year hiatus, is attributed to an outstanding domestic season in which he amassed 779 runs in just eight innings, boasting an impressive average of 389.50 in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy. Additionally, he played a crucial role in leading Vidarbha to victory in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 863 runs at an average of 53.94.

While much has evolved in Nair's career over the years, he remains fundamentally the same cricketer, now enriched with greater personal and professional experience. As the new IPL season approaches, he reflects on the ups and downs of his journey with a sense of acceptance, yet his desire to make a comeback to the Indian team is more fervent than ever.

“I believe I am closer to making a comeback rather than further away,” Nair expressed during a pre-season discussion. “It’s always in my thoughts, but my primary focus at this moment is to prepare thoroughly, comprehend what I need to achieve in the IPL, and contribute to every match I participate in.”

Despite a relatively modest IPL record, having played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kings XI Punjab, and Rajasthan Royals, where he accumulated 1,480 runs in 73 matches, Nair's standout season occurred in 2016 with Delhi, during which he scored 357 runs across 14 games. Nevertheless, he remains calm and composed about the future.

"I aim to maintain simplicity and respond to each situation as it arises," he stated. "I feel prepared and wish to carry the confidence gained from this domestic season into the IPL."

A significant overhaul during the mega auction will allow Nair to reconnect with his friend and former Karnataka teammate KL Rahul in the DC locker room. Both seasoned players are now navigating different stages of their careers under the guidance of new captain Axar Patel.

"It’s thrilling to reunite with KL," Nair remarked. "We have played together since our early days. He has shown remarkable consistency in the IPL over the past few seasons, and I am delighted to be alongside him again."

Regarding Patel, one of five new captains this season, Nair expresses confidence in his leadership abilities. "Axar is an exceptional cricketer. He has performed admirably in recent years and contributes a wealth of skills to the team. I am certain he will bring innovative ideas and strategies," Nair noted. "He has a vibrant personality and will instill a great deal of confidence within the team."

With both experience and form on his side, the 33-year-old is focused on seizing every opportunity without looking too far ahead.
