Karthik Revives Call for Varun Chakaravarthy's Inclusion in Champions Trophy
2 months ago | 5 Views
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has reiterated his endorsement of Varun Chakravarthy following the leg-spinner's impressive performance in the first T20I of the series against England. More than two months ago, Karthik had called on the BCCI to consider Chakravarthy for the Champions Trophy squad. Despite his remarkable performances in T20Is, the spinner was not selected for the ODI team, as the Champions Trophy is contested in the 50-over format.
Chakravarthy has rapidly established himself as one of India's most reliable bowlers in the T20 format in recent months, further solidifying his status with a commendable 3/23 performance in the first T20I held in Kolkata on Wednesday. His adaptability across different pitches has garnered him favourable reviews, including from Karthik, who has been closely monitoring the bowler's development.
In response to his previous tweet from two months ago, in which he warned that India would make a "grave error" by not including Chakravarthy in the Champions Trophy, Karthik expressed his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), questioning, “Could they have fitted him in????”.
Chakaravarthy's strong performances
Chakravarthy, recognized for his cunning variations and remarkable precision, delivered an outstanding performance during the second T20I of the series against South Africa, achieving impressive figures of 5/17. Although India did not secure victory in that match, Varun's bowling performance remains the best T20I figures recorded by a bowler from a full member nation in a losing effort.
Following a considerable hiatus between India's T20I matches, Chakravarthy maintained his consistency on Wednesday against England, where he claimed three wickets, successfully dismissing prominent English players including captain Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone.
Chakravarthy's contributions have also been noteworthy in the IPL, where he has been instrumental for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). With a tally of 21 wickets at an average of 19.14 in IPL 2024, Varun has demonstrated his significant potential across various formats.
While Varun has yet to make his ODI debut, his recent performances have only bolstered the case for his inclusion in upcoming limited-overs teams.
