Tensions have been palpable within the Indian cricket team since the commencement of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Reports emerged towards the conclusion of the series indicating a rift between coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma, who ultimately chose to withdraw from the final Test in Sydney. The situation deteriorated further when it was revealed that Rohit contemplated retirement following the fourth Test, leading to heightened tensions with Gambhir after he reversed his decision.

Several players from Team India, including wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, are expected to participate in the upcoming Ranji Trophy later this month, as there is increasing pressure for international players to engage in domestic competitions. Consequently, Gambhir's role as head coach has come under scrutiny, prompting former India captain Kapil Dev to provide his insights on the matter.

Dev, who captained the Indian team to victory in the 1983 World Cup, emphasized that while expectations are elevated, the responsibility for performance ultimately rests with the players.

“The expectations are high. The coaches are not on the field, but the captain and the team are on the ground. A new coach will come out with his own ideas and hope it will serve the country in a better sense. If he’s not, then people will raise their finger,” the 66-year-old former Indian skipper remarked to Gulf News.

Shastri is distinct from Dravid

Rahul Dravid is recognized for his composed demeanour and diplomatic approach to various situations, whereas Gautam Gambhir exhibits a more intense personality characterized by a straightforward and unrestrained style.

"Gambhir possesses a somewhat temperamental nature. He differs from both Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid. Each coach has a unique perspective, and we can only hope he will achieve greater success for the nation," Kapil added.

Gautam Gambhir's upcoming role will commence later this month when India faces England in a series of five T20 matches and three One Day Internationals. The return of India's batting icons—captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—will be significant as the focus shifts to the fifty-over format, especially with the Champions Trophy scheduled for February and March.
