As the Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, Rohit Sharma is experiencing significant pressure, both on and off the cricket field. The Indian captain's recent performance has notably declined, raising doubts about the team's chances in this prestigious ICC tournament.

His last ten innings across various formats (one ODI and nine Test innings) reveal a concerning trend: 2, 3, 9, 10, 3, 6, 18, 11, 0, 8. More troubling is the fact that he has not scored a single fifty since October 2024, a stark departure from his previously formidable batting prowess.

Compounding these issues are reports of discord within the dressing room and speculation regarding the potential end of Rohit’s international career if his performance does not see a significant improvement. The upcoming Champions Trophy is poised to be a critical challenge for the Indian captain amid this escalating pressure.

Kapil Dev, the legendary all-rounder and captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, expressed his views candidly regarding Rohit’s current form and its implications for the team. In a discussion on the Cricket Adda YouTube channel, Kapil recognized Rohit’s importance but stressed the necessity for a swift recovery.

"He is a significant player. I hope he finds his form soon. I wish the coach good luck; it requires time to establish stability. The entire nation is eager for the team's performance. Recently, the team has shown promise at times, yet it appears unsettled. When the captain struggles, the team faces challenges," Kapil remarked.

He also commented on the intense scrutiny faced by elite players, reminiscing about the euphoric celebrations following India’s T20 World Cup victory.

"The team has not performed well, and it is understandable that fans are frustrated. The scenes when these players returned after winning the T20 World Cup were unprecedented. Therefore, when they underperform, criticism is inevitable. My perspective is that we should not elevate players to such heights that they cannot cope with the pressure, only to then criticize them harshly when they falter."

Concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness

Kapil expressed his concerns regarding the uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the Champions Trophy. The prominent fast bowler has been out of action since January due to a back injury, raising questions about the strength of India's bowling lineup.

"There is no doubt about that. Over the past two years, no other fast bowler has made such a significant impact. The absence of a key player like Bumrah, who is comparable to Anil Kumble, certainly affects the team. I sincerely hope he makes a swift recovery," Kapil remarked.

As India prepares to commence their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, attention will be focused on Rohit Sharma to regain his form and provide strong leadership.
