A significant point of discussion during the current ICC Champions Trophy has been India's advantage of competing in all their matches at a single location, specifically in Dubai. This will mark their fifth game in these familiar conditions, while other teams have had to travel between Pakistan and the UAE.
Numerous analysts and former players have voiced their discontent regarding the ICC's decision-making that has resulted in this situation. Nevertheless, India's primary objective remains to secure victory in the final, where they will face New Zealand for the championship.
Kane Williamson, who delivered an outstanding century in the semifinal against South Africa, contributing to the Kiwis' total of 362, shared his perspective on the scheduling. The New Zealand team played in Dubai on Sunday, then traveled to Lahore for their semifinal on Wednesday, and will now return to Dubai for the final scheduled for Sunday.
“I suppose having played there on a number of occasions; there’s real clarity in how they want to operate," Williamson remarked after the match, addressing any potential advantage India may hold in the final.
“A little bit like our opportunity here, having played a number of times at this venue as well and I think that’s part and parcel in cricket," the former New Zealand captain added, referring to his team's acclimatization to Lahore over the past few weeks.
Williamson on positives from previous match vs IND
It is what it is. Our primary focus is on the upcoming match, considering the venue and the opposing team, all of which are significant factors. We have previously faced India at that location, where they secured a victory over New Zealand by 44 runs during the group stages in Dubai.
The conditions will differ, making it essential for us to extract some positives from that experience and to be clear in our approach as we prepare for the final in two or three days.
This variability is inherent in any tournament, as conditions tend to evolve over time, Williamson remarked. It was beneficial for us to have that recent match against India, as there were several commendable aspects to take away.
India enters the final with great confidence, having remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, including a decisive victory against Australia that secured their place in the finals. In contrast, New Zealand triumphed over South Africa by 50 runs in Lahore.
