Kane Williamson may not be participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season, but this allows fans to engage with him as a pundit and commentator. He has expressed that he is not particularly surprised by the consideration of his former Gujarat Titans teammate, Shubman Gill, as a potential future captain for India in all formats.

Williamson had a brief stint alongside Gill at the Gujarat Titans, making only three appearances with the team in 2023 and 2024. "He is a very composed individual," Williamson remarked to ESPNcricinfo. "He possesses a remarkable cricketing intellect and shows genuine concern for his teammates. He is quite clear about his approach to the game, which I believe is a significant leadership trait and quite contagious. Therefore, it is not surprising that he is being considered for leadership roles in some of the Indian teams soon."

He possesses a well-defined vision for his captaincy, which is crucial. Having clear ideas and executing them with conviction, while continuously learning and striving for improvement, are qualities he embodies. His capabilities are evident in his gameplay, particularly in his ability to adapt across different formats, from Test cricket to T20. He has demonstrated his skills at the highest level, making him a remarkable player and a promising leader.

Last season, Gill took over as captain of the Gujarat Titans following Hardik Pandya's exit. Unfortunately, it was a season to forget, as the team finished in eighth place after previously winning the IPL in their inaugural season and reaching the finals the following year. He has captained India in T20Is on five occasions and served as vice-captain to Rohit Sharma during their successful 2025 Champions Trophy campaign. Additionally, Gill has led at the domestic level, notably in the Duleep Trophy late last year.
