KL Rahul's Success Explained by Sunil Gavaskar: The Importance of Respect in Cricket

Team India encountered yet another batting failure during the first innings of the Brisbane Test, concluding Day 3 with a precarious score of 51/4. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed on just the second ball of the innings, while Shubman Gill also struggled to make an impact. Virat Kohli, in a familiar pattern, was caught attempting to play a shot outside off-stump, managing only 3 runs.

The inconsistency displayed by the Indian batsmen appears to have become a recurring issue throughout this Test season. However, KL Rahul has distinguished himself by performing admirably, particularly during the current tour of Australia. He ended the day unbeaten, having opened the batting and scored 33 runs off 64 balls.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar provided insights into the factors contributing to Rahul's success. In an interview with India Today, when asked about what sets KL Rahul apart from his teammates, Gavaskar noted that Rahul maintains a "still" position, which aids him in accurately judging the ball's line.

“He remains very still at the crease. There is a slight trigger movement, but his head stays upright, which allows him to discern the position of the off-stump and leave those deliveries. This is crucial. When the ball is new and hard, and bowlers are in control, it is essential to respect them for the first half-hour or 45 minutes, as the subsequent five hours will be yours,” Gavaskar remarked.

Rahul joined by Rohit

Following the dismissal of Rishabh Pant, who was the standout performer for the Indian team during its previous match at the Gabba, Indian captain Rohit Sharma took his position alongside Rahul at the crease. Rohit has been under significant scrutiny due to his ongoing difficulties with the bat in the longest format, managing to secure only one half-century in the five home Tests since August.

In the recent Adelaide Test, Rohit was unable to reach double digits in either innings, and he will be looking to make a strong recovery as India seeks a pivotal partnership on Day 4.
