KL Rahul’s Advice to Virat Kohli: ‘Be There Till the End’ – But He Didn’t Listen!

It is a rare occurrence for a player or teammate to express their thoughts to Virat Kohli regarding an on-field mistake. However, during India's semifinal match against Australia in the 2025 Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Stadium on Monday, KL Rahul exhibited visible anger and frustration towards Kohli for losing his wicket when he was merely 16 runs away from achieving a second century in the tournament. The wicketkeeper-batter later clarified the context of his reaction, sharing details of his conversation with Kohli prior to the dismissal.
When Rahul entered the game at No. 6, India required 86 runs from 90 balls on a challenging Dubai pitch. With the need for nearly a run-a-ball in pursuit of 264, the 32-year-old formulated a straightforward strategy. In an interview with Star Sports following the match, he disclosed that he advised Kohli to focus on rotating the strike, as he was the established batter, while Rahul would adopt a more aggressive approach against the bowling attack.
Rahul adhered to his strategy. After overcoming initial pressure, he struck three boundaries in three overs following the final drinks break. However, Kohli deviated from the plan in the 43rd over and lost his wicket, prompting Rahul's now-famous "Maar raha tha na" reaction.
"When I came in and played ten to twelve balls, I told him that he needed to stay at the crease until the end, while I would attempt to hit or take a chance each over," Rahul recounted regarding his discussion with Kohli. "We only needed six runs per over, but on that wicket, it felt more like eight or eight and a half. Therefore, it was essential to take one chance per over, whether it be a boundary or a six.
"I mentioned that I would handle that aspect, and he should focus on rotating the strike and remaining at the crease since he was the set batter, which could be more challenging for me. If he got out, the next batter would face a tougher situation. However, he believed it was within his capability to hit, but unfortunately, he did not time it well."
Kohli admits mistake
Following his achievement of the Player of the Match accolade for his impressive 84-run performance, Kohli acknowledged that he deviated from his standard approach.
"When I was dismissed, the strategy was to score an additional 20 runs and aim to conclude the innings within a few overs. Typically, that is the approach I adhere to; however, there are instances when execution does not align with intentions. It largely depends on the conditions; the pitch indicates the manner in which the game should be played, and I adapt my play accordingly," he remarked.
