Adelaide: Cricket is fundamentally a team sport; however, it also emphasizes individual achievements. A team may perform admirably, yet if an individual player struggles, they may be overlooked, particularly in a cricketing nation like India where talent is abundant. Consequently, once players find their comfort zone, they often hesitate to step outside of it.

Captain Rohit Sharma has not batted lower in the order for six years and has enjoyed considerable success as an opener, amassing 2,685 runs at an average of 44.01 over 37 matches. Many anticipated that he would return to his favoured position upon rejoining the team after missing the first Test.

However, Rohit had different plans. After observing KL Rahul's performance in Perth, he recognized that Rahul should remain at the top of the order.

“(Rahul) will be opening the batting. I’ll be somewhere in the middle,” Rohit informed reporters on Thursday. “Those two players at the top – based on this one Test match (in Perth) – batted exceptionally well.

“While I was at home with my newborn, I watched KL's innings, and it was truly impressive. I felt there was no reason to alter that arrangement now. Perhaps circumstances will change in the future, but given KL's recent performances outside India, he certainly deserves that position at this moment.”

Rohit further stated: “This partnership with Jaiswal has contributed to our success in the first Test. It likely played a crucial role in securing the victory. Achieving nearly 500 runs (in the second innings – 487/6 declared) in a place like Perth is a significant accomplishment. I see no reason to modify that strategy. For me, it was quite straightforward – though personally challenging – but it made perfect sense for the team.”

There are rare athletes who willingly set aside their egos, contributing more to the team than they receive in return. Unfortunately, such selflessness is not always recognized as it should be. Had Rohit chosen to open, there would have been no criticism; instead, he demonstrated true leadership by prioritizing the team's needs.
